This group covers the non-Asian restaurants, cafes, bars and food businesses that also appear in a mixed-cuisine food scene, including American diners, pizza, Mexican food, burgers, steakhouses and bakeries. Standard US restaurant norms apply: lunch and dinner service with a quieter stretch between, cards and tap-to-pay accepted almost everywhere, and a tip of 15-20% customary for table service. Fast food and quick-service counters expect payment up front and tipping is optional. Bars check ID for anyone who looks under 30, and the drinking age is 21 nationwide. Many restaurants in this group take reservations online through third-party platforms, while casual and fast-food spots are walk-in only. Sales tax is added at the register on top of the menu price and varies by city and state, so the final total is usually a few percent higher than the posted prices suggest.

Berkeley is in California, on the West Coast, where the climate ranges from foggy coast to hot inland valleys, wildfire season can affect air quality in late summer, and traffic is the main thing to plan around. Getting around Berkeley is easiest by car; street parking is metered in busy downtown areas, and most suburban businesses have their own lot. Ride-share apps such as Uber and Lyft operate across California's larger cities, and public transit varies from extensive to minimal.

I think this might be my favorite place from the dining halls! Quality here is definitely a lot better and the vibes are definitely so nice! There are days when I'm not as thrilled with the food, but there have been so many times when I'd come in for the potato bar or the fried Korean tofu (I think they have that on Saturdays; I should've gone there more often when the tofu was offered since that was genuinely so elite). I've been going to the dining halls every year since freshman year, and I genuinely don't regret it. Foothill is definitely my favorite, and marching up Hearst avenue makes it even more worth it!

Foothill is like the Anthony Davis of the Berkeley Dining community β you never know if you're getting a complete, two-way, Clark-Kerr-esque meal, or if you're getting the most legitimately atrocious food you have ever tried in your life. Pro tip: take CS70 to optimize your Berkeley dining experience, because every day at Foothill is an expected value analysis that must be looked at on a case-by-case basis. This is the quintessential Berkeley experience. 5 stars.

Want to try UC Berkeley Dining Hall cuisine (for some reason)? Foothill is probably one of the better options to pick. There are various options, including vegetarian/vegan friendly options, and menus change every day to incorporate new types of food ranging from the simple fish and chips or mac and cheese to the interesting pho station that appears infrequently. The star of the show is definitely the ice cream. I've only seen it once been used through my time as a student though, so I'm not too sure if it purely exists to make visiting children happy or let the Foothill students be reminded of their existence in Berkeley comes with small benefits of ice cream along with developing social ineptitude and ripped bicyclist thighs. Jokes aside, if you're a Unit 2 or Unit 3 student (or a person hellbent on getting that college dining hall experience early), be prepared for a strenuous climb of 19 flights of stairs without a shuttle. Unit 4, more commonly known as Foothill, is notorious for being up a hill as its name suggests (and filled with socially awkward dormmates), and the winning result is slightly above average food. Regardless, Foothill Dining serves proper food that is sure t
